Macomber/Hayes family
reviewed on: 03/23/2015 by Tina L HayesWe have really liked having my father at CAL Sweet Memories unit, he has dementia and throat cancer and having a rough time. The med techs and staff have been wonderful with taking care of him, some ladies more than others that have dealt with cancer and know how to handle my very stubborn father! They are very caring and very knowledgable of the care needed for their residents! They are also very reasonably priced!
Happy vs Content - they know the difference
reviewed on: 02/03/2018 by Michelle RI visited this community a couple of months in search for a safe, comfortable and supportive place for my mother after losing my father. She, understandably, has been struggling with the loss of my father; the love of her life and husband of nearly 60 years. She and I both were nervously anticipating even exploring options, but we both knew she didn’t emotionally need to be alone. I can tell you, this process isn’t easy. But after some online research, I made my first call. I was instantly greeted by the warmest, happiest woman on the other end of the phone (forgive me, I didn’t catch her name) and she immediately set the tone. She transfered me to a gentleman name Chad, who graciously listened as I rambled on and on. He invited me for a visit and I fell in love with the community. Everyone seemed so happy, and I saw my mother quietly smile and light up as person after person greeted her, and residents went out of their way to say hello. The facility is gorgeous. The food was delicious. These things are important. But what you cannot quantify is how you feel when there. It’s alive, and my mother felt it too. It is safe, warm and you immediately get the sense of belonging. I wish I could say my mother is thriving there, having found a new sense of purpose in this next chapter of life. However, I cannot. Our mother is amazing, and I am one of 3 children spread out across the country, and I (and Mom) was outvoted. I will tell you this, if the opportunity arises for her to live in VA, there is no other choice than this community. We ended up visiting several places, with each never quite measuring up to Commonwealth. We just wish they were in other states! You won’t go wrong with this community. I encourage anyone who is looking for themselves, a parent or relative, to really Center yourself and imagine living in the community. Look past the decor and pay attention to how you feel, and do the residents look happy? Are they content or HAPPY? There is a difference, and Commonwealth of Hampton gets that.
Friendly Staff!!
reviewed on: 02/27/2017 by AnonymousI have no complaints about the tour I had received at this community. The staff was very welcoming and greeted my family and I with a smile and open arms. I thought that the facility was nicely maintained and had a lot of great amenities they offered to there residents. It was just unfortunately not the right budget and fit for my mother.
Warm and friendly atmosphere.
reviewed on: 07/24/2017 by Skip SimpsonMy sister in-law moved into Commonwealth on July 10th. It is clean, friendly, has more activities than one can keep up with and has a great staff. Couldn't ask for more.
Completely Investigate other facilities in the area before deciding.
reviewed on: 11/10/2018 by JerryCommonwealth Sr Living has very friendly staff members who seem to try to do the best they can. As with any other health care facilities, it is only as good as the worst staff member and keeping good caring nursing aides is hard to do. CSL could improve their services by taking away the cell phones that are carried by the nursing staff as they seem to be spending way too much time on them and not on the residents. The floors and common areas could use more deep cleaning and the staff could use more training in making beds, cleaning the residents and administering medications. The food is good considering they are cooking for a wide array of diets and preferences. The fees are better than other facilities and the building has a warm welcoming atmosphere.
