Age-Friendly Initiative in New York City
Politico Magazine’s coverage of “Age-Friendly NYC” highlighted how “Seniors Take Manhattan,” and focused on recent initiatives that have allowed senior residents to flourish there.
According to the article, a million people over the age of 65 currently call New York City home, with that number expected to grow by 50% — to 1.5 million in 2030.
Recognizing that city improvements needed to be made for its fast growing senior population, New York City — also a leader in WHO’s age-friendly cities initiative — set about instituting programs to improve senior life. More crossing time at intersections have been added, as well as pedestrian safety islands for crossing the street, in addition to redesigned, age-friendly bus shelters and public bus outing programs — to name a few.
Now, “in many ways,” the article states: “New York is a utopia for seniors — or that’s how it seems to seniors enjoying life in the big city.”
Sheila Bellen, an 82-year-old NYC resident says, “New York… is a wonderland for older people.” She continues:
“If you have to be older and want to live someplace, this is the place to be.”
Senior Living Model Used in Assisted Living Communities Across the U.S.
New York City has made such progress with their age-friendly program, that other cities across the U.S. are now using their senior living model.
The article mentions that The District of Columbia “has finished its planning process and has designated 12 businesses age-friendly” in Washington D.C., after using New York’s blueprint.
This model is important for baby boomers and aging seniors who are a part of the shift in senior living today, that focuses on city and Main Street style assisted living.
